In this post, we’ll share everything you need to know about swimming at String Lake, what makes it unique, and a few other top spots in the park you won’t want to miss.
String Lake: A Unique Swimming Spot in Grand Teton National Park
We visited String Lake in July, and although the summer heat made it the perfect time for a dip, the water was extremely cold—but absolutely worth it! Surrounded by towering peaks of the Teton Mountains, the lake provides one of the most scenic backdrops for swimming you’ll find anywhere. The views alone are reason enough to make a stop here, offering the chance to enjoy the park’s natural beauty in a whole new way.
Staying Safe: Bear Awareness is a Must
While String Lake offers a serene swimming experience, it’s essential to stay bear-aware. The park takes wildlife safety seriously, with bear lockers available to store food and belongings and regular patrols to ensure visitor safety. Many people swim here, but it’s important to follow safety guidelines to respect the animals and avoid any risky encounters. Always bring bear spray, and stay informed on park rules regarding wildlife.
More Must-See Spots in Grand Teton National Park
No trip to the Tetons is complete without visiting these additional attractions:
- Jenny Lake: One of the most popular destinations in the park, Jenny Lake offers stunning views and opportunities to explore. Take a boat ride across the lake to access scenic hiking trails, waterfalls, and overlooks that immerse you in the beauty of the Teton Mountains.
- Huckleberry Milkshakes: After a day of swimming or hiking, treat yourself to one of the park’s famous huckleberry milkshakes. This sweet and creamy dessert is the perfect way to refuel and a local favorite that you won’t want to miss. We definitely enjoyed this dessert!

Pro Tips for Visiting String Lake
- Pack layers: Even in July, the water is cold, so bring towels and warm clothes to change into after swimming.
- Bring snacks: There are no concessions by the lake, but be sure to store food properly in bear lockers. We enjoyed lunch at the picinic tables near the parking lot and then stored our food securely in our vehicle while we went for a swim.
- Arrive early: Parking can fill up quickly, especially on hot days, so try to arrive in the morning to secure a spot. Even though this is the best practice, we were able to get a parking spot in the afternoon.
